Guidelines For Goal Setting

By Chris Brady

Goal setting is something everyone has heard of and very few actually do. Of those of us that practice it, or try to, on a regular basis, many of us fall into some traps along the way. But goal setting done properly can invigorate you and produce incredible results. Don't be like the average person out there who isn't striving for anything, who lets life simply parade on by, who doesn't exercise his or her gifts to the fullest exertion, and realizes toward the end of his or her life that most of it has passed by. Goal setting is a way to keep positive pressure on one's self. It is a way to make sure we are living while we are alive. And it is actually quite fun, believe it or not!

Here are some guidelines to proper goal setting:

1. Goals should be realistic but challenging: a goal should be something that you actually believe you can accomplish, but at the same time, it should put a little fear into you that it will require significant effort on your part to accomplish.

2. Goals should be specific: be specific when setting your goals. General goals have no power to inspire. Specific goals leave you no place to hide

3. Goals should be written down and displayed where you can't forget about them: a goal not written down is simply a wish. Once written, however, a goal becomes "official" and remains on display to keep you in the game.

4. Goals should be measurable: There is no sense in setting a goal if you have no concrete way of measuring your progress toward that goal. Make sure they are measurable, and check your progress regularly.

5. Goals should be in line with your overall purpose: One of the biggest challenges in life is not succeeding, but succeeding at something that really matters! Don't get sucked into setting goals for accomplishment in areas that are not your heart's desire. You only have one life, God built you for a specific purpose, figure out that purpose and pursue it with all you've got! THEN set goals in that area! Remember, only do what only you were built to do. Leave everyone else's agenda to them!

6. Goals should stand alone: What I mean by this is that some people set too many goals. They set goals in different areas, at different levels, and before very long at all, they are confused by them all. This is not the way to set goals. The secret of success is to focus. One dominant, overriding goal will produce creativity and action. So keep it simple and singular.

7. Goals should be short-term enough to put pressure on you today: A "someday" goal will not work, and is nothing more than a fantasy. A goal must put you in positive tension today, or it is not functioning properly. If you have set your goal out there far enough that you think, "Well, I can get started on that tomorrow and still have time to accomplish it," then you've set it too far out on the calendar.

8. Goals should have a specific date of accomplishment: This goes with number 7 above. Make sure you have a finish line marked on your calendar.

There is much more to goal setting, but for me, these are the high points. Follow these, and you'll be on your way to achievement and significance. Neglect this technique, and you'll waste days, if not years, that you'll never get back.

What is your overriding goal right now? If you don't have one, set it quickly and get after it. The clock is ticking!

We are not small in Gods eyes

Arrangements were made for me to fly a plane and God spoke and said, “When you're in the air listen to my voice for I will speak to you. “ Towards the end of the flight God spoke.

“Look down below. (I looked) Look at all my creation and everything below. What you see is all small to me, compared to how big and great you are in my eyes.”

Five minutes later he spoke again. “Look down below again, Look above, look from side to side of you. (I looked) Imagine the depth and width of what you see in the air is the depth and width of how much I love you and the plans I have are so in depth your mind could not comprehend it. It stretches out miles and miles from one end to the other and never ends.

What you see as you look around below and high is my creation of all I created, but nothing compares to how special and big you are to me. That is how much you mean to me.”

He showed me the depth and the width of that love is the same love for the world that he has.

I started thinking how much it amazed me. I thought that of the love he showed me of how big and great it is and how it stretches miles and miles is that type of love he showed on the cross for us all.

He was mocked, laughed at, and rejected. He had a crown of thorns on his head and blood and water flowed yet he said, “Father forgive them they know not what they do.”

Before when I was flying the instructor told me after being so high up to take the wheel and he's letting go.

When I was actually flying I started to panic and said to him, “no you take it and fly, I can't do it.” He said, “Yes you can now fly it.”

God illustrated so much by showing me later that he is like that. He is the controller and the instructor there to instruct all I am to do.

He will not leave me but stand beside me and will protect me and not let anything happen to me.

The turbulence started bothering me sometime later and he spoke again, “there will be times like the turbulence that things will be rough but even during those times I am here and will stand beside you.”

The instructor did a G-force turn. It gave me a rush and was so enjoyable, I told him to do it again and he did.

God showed me that he wants to take me for a ride and to experience things with him and by allowing it that it would be the time of my life and something I would want more of.

He is willing to give and give abundantly and freely, just let him be in control. He will give me things but to follow his will and let him control it. He will lead the way.

I believe not only for me but the people in this world that he is such a big God and his love is amazing. We are not small in his eyes but, great, and special.

Believe you can succeed. Big opportunities over the internet are better now then ever!!! With the right mind set.

Success means many wonderful, positive things. A fine home, vacations, travel, new things, financial security, giving your children maximum advantages. Success means winning admiration, leadership, being looked up to by people in your business and social life. Success means freedom. Freedom from worries, fears, frustrations, and failure. Success means self-respect, continually finding more real happiness and satisfaction from life, being able to do more for those who depend on you.

Some of the most practical success-building wisdom is found in that biblical quotation stating that faith can move mountains. Believe, really believe, you can move a mountain, and you can. Not many people believe that they can move mountains. So, as a result, not many people do. On some occasion you’ve probably heard someone say something like "it’s nonsense to think you can make a mountain move away just by say’ Mountain, move away.’ It’s simply impossible."People who think this way have belief confused with wishful thinking. And true enough, you can’t wish away a mountain.

You can’t wish yourself into an executive suite. Nor can you wish yourself into a five-bedroom, three-bath house or the high-income brackets. You can’t wish yourself into a position of leadership.

Belief works this way. Belief, the "I’m- positive-I-can" attitude, generates the power, skill, and energy needed to do. When you believe I-can-do-it, the how-to-do-it develops.

Every day all over the nation young people start working in new jobs. Each of them "wishes" that someday he could enjoy the success that goes with reaching the top. But the majority of these young people simply don’t have the belief that it takes to reach the top rungs. And they don’t reach the top. Believing it’s impossible to climb high, they do not discover the steps that lead to great heights. Their behavior remains that of the "average" person.

But a small number of these young people really believe they will succeed. They approach their work with the "I’m-going-to-the-top" attitude. And with substantial belief they reach the top. Believing they will succeed - and that it’s not impossible-these folks study and observe the behavior of senior executives. They learn how successful people approach problems and make decisions. They observe the attitudes of successful people.

The how-to-do-it always comes to the person who believes he can do it.
It all starts with the right Mind Set. I always know that I would be successful one day (I-can-do-it) and I was always looking (how-to-do-it). I was running around in circles working hard for my big dreams. I was making good money but I was hitting a brick wall and I could not get through it.
